‘For many people, security is not something that is or can be guaranteed by central authorities but has to be created in peer-to-peer systems and interactions.’
Angus is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Edinburgh.
Angus is currently researching how individuals create security and trust in the darknet, a set of systems that anonymise and encrypt internet traffic. The darknet is the site for cryptomarkets which exchange illicit products and services, especially drugs. Darknet users view anonymity as a useful resource that enables market interactions and allows for useful exchange of knowledge about drug consumption techniques, quality safety. He criticises the prevailing depiction of anonymity as harmful.
