Thomas Molony

Tom Molony

Tom is a lecturer in the Centre of African Studies, University of Edinburgh.

His geographic focus is East Africa, especially Tanzania. He has conducted research on informal economies, mobile phones, elections and on bioenergy. Tom has also published on research methods in Africa, and is author of a book on Julius Nyerere’s life prior to his formal entry into the political arena.

He is convenor of a postgraduate course called Research in Africa, and also convenes Swahili language and culture courses that are offered to both postgraduates and undergraduates.

Tom is Principal Investigator on the ESRC-DFID-funded Social Media and Security in Africa (SMS Africa), which aims to provide a timely understanding of the role social media plays in documenting and driving (in)security in East and West Africa. He also works on a British Library-funded project that aims to assist the protection of the archive of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) in Nairobi.
